Journal Update 23rd April 2004 / Ko Pi Le Island, Thailand
We are now in Thailand after a 3 hour ferry ride from Langkawi via Satun. It is the end of the season here so all is very quiet. The rains will be coming soon and they will close down the park to tourists. The beach is empty and the sea is a lovely green colour. It is very, very rural with just a few bamboo huts, though after walking in to the jungle we have found the only restaurant on the island and a little terminal to send emails. We met some people here that Joe rescued off the rocks in Tioman Island, they arrived last night and told us the hut they were staying in had rats running around - yikes! I think I like a bit of civilisation around me. We shall stick around tomorrow me thinks and then move on.

Journal Update 24th April 2004 / Ko Pi Le Island

"'There's A Rat In Me Kitchen" so the story continues:

As you know we are on the picture postcard island of Ko Pi Le. But not all is as it seems in the pictures and the Rough Guide descriptions. We found an idyllic bamboo hut on the beach in which to sleep last night but just as we were relaxing under the mosquito net I looked up and saw two beady eyes looking down at me, paws and a long straggly black tail- Yikes- I yelped to Joe who unfortunately missed it. He did however hear the squeak squeak of the thing as it tap danced on the roof. That was it we were out of there! Down to the charm-less concrete huts further down the beach.

The couple we had met in Tioman (Darren and Amanda) decided to get drunk and brave it out for another night, though they had slept on the beach the night before to escape from them and they thought that they would be safe in a hut nearer the beach.

Joe saw them today and found out that all was well until 5am when they found one at the foot of the mattress. Needless to say they were packed and ready for the two o'clock ferry back to the civilized world. We however, spent the day lounging around (Joe is currently next to me at the Pooh Bar on the cushions on the floor with a big sign above his head that says lazy corner!).

There was more drama as we witnessed a strange altercation on the beach. We had noticed a very beautiful woman in the cafe earlier with a little girl. We think she is French (very thin). Well she was with a young Thai guy and we saw her later riding up and down the beach on his scooter. Just as she rode past, Joey and I were in the sea, and I saw this big guy (who owns the apartments where we are staying) pull her from the bike. We both got out of the sea to help her up. She was swearing and throwing sand at him. Joe went to pick up the bike and the guy shouts "NO FARANG! SHE NO GOOD". Then the young Thai guy came up the beach and asked me what had happened to which I said, "I don't know". Then the big guy started hitting him with a big stick. We retreated back in to the sea and are very bemused as to what it was all about. Joe said he was always told by his friend who lived in Thailand never to get involved with any disputes with local Thais as there are always loads of them and they back each other up, added to that they are hard as nails. I felt bad for the woman but she didn't look hurt.

We decided to blow the deposit for a house on a grand world tour through 2004. We booked through STA travel and put together a brief itinerary including the Far East, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. As it turned out we experienced China, Bali, Fiji and many more places in between.

We decided to end the trip with a wedding in Las Vegas (which was very memorable!) As a wedding present my brother put together an on-line travel blog for us which was a great tool for documenting our journey. This experience truly changed our lives and we encountered many fantastic people through out the world. I hope you enjoy reading some highlights of our journal!

So tomorrow we are back to the mainland. On the positive side the island is beautiful, with white sand and emerald green sea. The local population are sea gypsies who have an encampment in the interior. We met a nice Canadian teacher today who is a diver, he said the Thai reefs have suffered terribly and 95% are now ruined. He has been coming for 4 years and it is getting worse with the pollution from the boats. He had picked up a trophy on the beach that he said to Joe he thought was some crustation. Joe had a good look and said "That looks like Rats teeth to me" on closer investigation it was a whole jaws worth. The guy dropped it pretty quickly and all afternoon we were joking that it was going to swim by, searching for its bottom set.

On to pleasanter thoughts now I have that all off my chest. We had a fantastic meal the night we left Lankawi in the Sun Village with the best pudding we have ever tasted of black rice and coconut milk with Papaya. They had the best toilets we have ever seen, most incredible with a water stream running past and flowers in the bowl. HOW CHIC!
